Is Cambridge Racist?

Is Cambridge Racist?

Cambridge is a city on the River Cam in eastern England, home to the prestigious University of Cambridge, dating to 1209. University colleges include King’s, famed for its choir and towering Gothic chapel, as well as Trinity, founded by Henry VIII, and St John’s, with its 16th-century Great Gate.

Recent statistics in the area show that there is a lack of ethnic minority groups in Cambridge University. This is is shown in the photograph below that shows the information collected by researchers at the university.
The statistics show that the majority ethnic group attending the university are white British. This has raised a lot of controversy within the college and around the world. Many people are enraged and believe that if you are not white- British, then you have a slim chance of attending Cambridge university.
This has been reflected negatively around the world, allowing ethnic minorities to think that they don't stand a chance in a place like Cambridge.

However one student who has strong views on racism is Jason Okundaye, who was allegedly born in south London and is a black Cambridge student. He studies sociology and politics at the prestigious university’s Pembroke College and is the head of the Cambridge University Equality Group which suggests he has very strong views on the topic of racism. He tweeted about his opinion on racism on the 29th July 2017. As he studies at Cambridge and is tweeting about all white people are racist suggests he experiences racism day to day and has a strong view that "white people are racist".  He also is living in an area with many "white middle class people" who work within the city so again can be talking about his experiences with employment and how he's treated in Cambridge.

He then followed up on these tweets:
My tweets on white racism had been said before, in response to people acting as if racism is exclusive to working-class people.
“I stated that regardless of sexuality, class, gender or age, all white people are racist, ie, not just one type of white person.
The follow up of the tweets also suggests Mr Okundaye's strong view on racism of which he has experienced.

From all this evidence it can be suggested that in fact there is a problem with racism in the Cambridge area due to the students required to get into the prestigious colleges and the not so diverse population. This is a problem which should be addressed and the Cambridgeshire Universities are currently looking into the problem and taking it very seriously. They released a statement to us saying "We are currently taking this problem very seriously and are looking into ways in which we can become more diverse as a university within all of our colleges."
