Textual Analysis: The Sun

  • Masthead- Chosen to use a red colour which stands out and has connotations of love and importance. This could suggest that the paper covers important issues and the audience is meant to fall in 'love' with the paper. The text is in Bold white Sans serif font which suggests it is not a fancy newspaper and has a target audience of the working class.
  • The headline- The headline is a play on words and is based on a Katy Perry song. The use of this suggests it is relatable to the target audience 'the working class' who would listen to this song on the radio. Its again in Sans serif font suggesting its a basic newspaper targeted at the working class.
  • For the Headline they have chosen to use a black background. The symbolic code for this is darkness and dull suggesting the audience is meant to be drawn to the text rather than the background. So there is binary opposition of black and white with the text being white and the background black.
  • The use of several stories suggests that the target audience have to have more then one story to keep their attention
  • The main headline is followed by a smaller text which says 'Trans classes for kids age 2' i think it has been put in a smaller font as it isa controversial topic so the audience will be more drawn to read more once they read the smaller text. Its not as big as the headline as the attention is meant to be drawn to the headline first.
  •  The colour scheme isn't very matching, for the main headline its in black and white which compliment each other. But for other articles They have used blues, reds and some yellow font.
