Why do producers use representation:

  • Toddler - aware of surroundings
  • hammer attack - violent
  • use of images - happy couple, innocent child, "murder" scene and the weapon (hammer)
  • Nothing has been confirmed 
  • Preferred reading - Audience are wanted to feel guilt, sympathetic of baby and anger 
  • the use of all the images makes the audience feel as they are putting the story together
  • Maybe the audience positioned as the killer as the worried baby is looking up
  • Only one baby has their face covered as they are alive but the other baby boy is dead so can be shown. makes audience feel more empathetic 
  • Idea of hegemony and stereotypes - man isn't British - anchors the audience that the parents are outsiders of society - man is Indian
  • Othering - Makes the man different - Indian, May have mental health problem

  • negative representation of working class people 
  • referential code, typical love story, things going wrong
  • all depends on the negotiated reading- how the audience interprets it

  • Page 7 not as important as other stories
  • only one picture - shows the police officer going to house but nobody else is pictured
  • Mentioned race of parents - shouldn't mention if not relevant to the story 


The Today Show - Radio 4: all headlines political apart from Finsbury park murder

  4. 'Fake news' - Trump , Obama and Russia 
  5. Finsbury Park murder - may be the father, location, didn't say weapon used as its alleged, went straight to the charge as apposed to the detail of the crime, no mention of ethnicity, wife not mentioned and not relevant  


  • Formality of accent - middle class, south of England, intelligence
  • Producers political ideologies outshine any other stories 


 Social media comments about the article:

  • Helps newsarticle become viral
  • Gets them money 
  • Says stuff in the comments which the newspaper cant say
  • Use race, religion and ethnicity

As the audience gets into the article they find out the mother and uncle were released
This may prove they are innocent in which the audience may feel sympathetic for the mother.
