Introduction to audience
Component one Section A: Analysing media language and representation (Kiss of Vampire, Tide advert, water aid advert)
Component one section B: Analysing media industries and audiences (Tide advert and water aid advert)
Why is media so preoccupied with Audience?
Audience reaction affects the producer
Target Audience - The audience that the producer is aiming for
Primary Audience - The specific audience the producer is aiming for
Secondary Audience - The second group the producer is aiming for
T.A.P (text, audience Producer) - Producer encodes text - the audience then decodes the text

Primary Audience - The specific audience the producer is aiming for
Secondary Audience - The second group the producer is aiming for
T.A.P (text, audience Producer) - Producer encodes text - the audience then decodes the text
Audience:
- Targeting - Creating a media text who the producer aims to target a certain group of people
- Attracting - How the media text gains attention or attracts a certain audience
- Reaching - How the producer actually shows the text and obtains a wider audience
- Addressing - How the media text/producer communicates with the audience
- Constructing - Putting together/constructing the audience itself
The last of us:
Target audience - Heterosexual male, gamers, young adults around 17
Mise en scene - Dark and gloomy, use of guns, abandoned mise-en-scene
Binary opposition - light to dark
Characters - young girl (13) not sexualised, older male suggests protection of the young girl
Secondary audience - 12-16 year olds
Hermeneutic code- Don't know what the characters are looking at, who are the characters, what has happened in the mise-en-scene
How to split up Audiences:
- Age
- Gender
- Sexuality
- Race
- religion
- Interests and Hobbies
- class (demographics where we put people into groups based on numbers and statistics)
- Beliefs (ideology)
- Culture
- Location
Demographic table
Issues:
- Not very well defined
- Unfair
- Too reductive
- Tells us very little about the audience
Psychographics - The classification of people according to attitudes, aspirations and other psychological criteria.
Mcdonalds Advert
Target audience - Pregnant women, different races, working class (watching football), middle aged
Demographic - Working class D
Mise-en-scene - their house, homely, relaxed, outside the house working class area as the shutters on all the building and it seems quite dismal
Binary opposition - Everywhere is dark and closed until the man gets to Mcdonalds
