Case Study - Kiss Of The Vampire poster

Kiss Of The Vampire (1963) - Film Poster

Use of connotative features:

  • The font is used to show the Horror theme of the poster as well as the time the poster was created. The fact it looks old and worn fits well with the connotations of vampires being old.

  • Blood suggests death but the colour red also has connotations of romance

  • The bats have connotations of gothic horror as well as the moon, the castle and the bad weather reflecting the mood

  • Two of the characters may be in a romantic relationship as the male character seems to be holding the female, showing he has dominance over her.

  • The other two characters shows the woman has dominance over the man which is unusual in the 1960s where males were normally dominant over the females.

Element of Time:

  • The womens clothes suggest it was the 1960s as they're wearing slip dresses which were common in those times

  • The text also suggests its an old poster as it has a different style to modern day text. They have also used a version of serif font.

Character Archetypes:

  • Women are sexualised
  • Male dominance over one of the women
  • Vampire stereotype (Dracula)

  • Genre convention- Gothic Horror

  • Codes:

Proairetic code - What is she going to do next to the man?, Why does the man look afraid?
Symbolic code- the moon can symbolise the genre, red symbolises blood/death as well as romance
Hermeneutic code- Why has she not go shoes on?, what has happened so far?

  • Mise en scene- Use of bats, moon, castle and bad weather

  • Disequilibrium- narrative becomes unbalanced around middle

  • Character archetypes - Damsel in distress, sexualisation of female, women are objectified (the process of representing an individual as an object), dehumanisation,

  • binary opposition - light to dark, evil and innocence, kiss and vampire, male and female, power and helplessness
